What Is Prominent Ear?
Prominent ear deformity is one of the most common issues affecting the psychosocial development of many individuals today. It is seen in approximately 5% of the white population. Although it is more common in males, it most frequently affects pediatric patients.
How Does Prominent Ear Deformity Occur?
In a normal ear anatomy, structures such as the antihelix (an inner fold), the concha (the external bowl-shaped part of the ear), and the earlobe (lobule) are present. Prominent ear deformity is caused by abnormalities in these anatomical structures. The most significant cause is an underdeveloped or absent antihelical fold, which causes the ear to protrude outward and increases the distance between the ear and the head. Another cause is an excessively large, wide, or deep concha, which also results in the ear protruding outward.
When Can Prominent Ear Surgery Be Performed?
In children, ear development is usually complete by the age of 5–6. It is generally recommended that the surgery be performed before the child starts primary school to prevent any psychosocial effects.
How Is Prominent Ear Surgery Performed?
In children, general anesthesia is preferred. In adults, the procedure can be performed under local anesthesia or with sedation. Regardless of age, the surgery is carried out through an incision made behind the ear. A small amount of skin is removed, and if present, excess cartilage is excised. The ear is then reshaped and fixed in place using special sutures and flaps prepared behind the ear. If there is an anomaly in the earlobe, it is corrected as well.
What Is the Postoperative Process Like After Prominent Ear Surgery?
Patients are usually discharged on the same day; hospitalization is not required. A special dressing is applied postoperatively and kept in place for two days. After two days, the dressing is removed, and patients are instructed to wear a special bandage for two weeks. From the third week up to one month, patients are advised to wear the bandage at night. This helps the ears maintain their new shape and protects them from external impact and trauma.
Is Prominent Ear Surgery Painful?
Postoperative pain varies depending on the individual and the surgical technique used. On average, mild pain may last about two days. This is an expected part of the recovery and can be managed with prescribed pain relievers.

Frequently Asked Questions
Otoplasty is a surgical procedure performed to correct prominent ear deformity. During the procedure, the ear cartilage is reshaped, and the ear is positioned closer to the head.
The otoplasty procedure typically takes between 1 and 2 hours and is usually performed under local anesthesia. The recovery process varies from person to person, but in most cases, normal activities can be resumed within a few days.
The otoplasty procedure generally causes minimal pain, and scarring is usually minimal as well. Mild discomfort and swelling may occur after the procedure, but these typically subside within a few days.
The otoplasty procedure may be suitable for individuals who are bothered by prominent ear deformity and wish to achieve a more symmetrical appearance.
